Teens and technology
The vast majority of teens in the US, 87% of those aged 12 to 17, now use the internet. That's about 21 million of the youth use the internet. 51% of teenage internet users say they go online daily, it was 42% in 2000. 81% percent of teen internet users play online games. 32% of all teens use IM everyday. Most teens go online at home. Usually what teens do online is go websites about movies, send or receive IM, look about jobs, play online games, look for spirutual and religous help. Online teens who want to have a private conversation with someone are more likely to turn to IM. Text messages are usually sent on the keypad of a cellular phone. American teens have come to embrace texting. Cell phone owners are more likely to engage in online activity. Teens sometimes play practical jokes on people using instant messaging. IM from teenagers isnt always pleasant. Im is a good way to communicate with people who you don't usually call or live close to. People with IM usually have more then 1 screen name. In 1996, two teenagers were admitted to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) emergency room saying they had overdosed on GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyric acid. The drug is today known as the "date rape drug," but it was virtually unknown to hospital staff at the time. When they recovered, the teens told doctors they had used the Internet to learn how to synthesize GHB and figure out how much they could safely take.
